The Ragini Nagu Interview
Dubai . Oil on canvas - Ink on paper

What is your Art?
My arts no more than a prolonged feeling, a release of sorts, I guess that’s what almost all art is. It’s an attempt to make something bigger than oneself. Personally I think its a mood, a fleeting moment that I am so eager to celebrate. I love thinking of it like an experiment. I have this vague idea of where I want things to go, so I dig deep and pull out just the right amount of emotion and then, my mind goes blank. From that point on, its an evolutionary process, that I just have to trust. Surf your emotions, isn’t that what they say?
I’m also obsessed with the idea of celebrating imperfections. When you learn to zone out your judgement and all you see is shapes, you don’t prefer one over the other, they’re all quirks, perfect in their own way. All valuable enough to be noticed.

Who is your Art?
My art has a lot of me in it, each piece is a self portrait of some kind. It doesn’t matter what it is visually. Maybe a cat, a car or a caricature, but when I create a graphic representation of it, I’m one with it, feeling my way through every contour, every color. When I draw it, I feel a union, once I’m done, it’s like a weight lifts, almost like a part of me left.

Where is your Art?
Honestly, I haven’t a clue where my art is. Every piece is a personal journey to a new destination. I’ve never been able to go to the same place twice. Maybe because its always on the move or maybe because I’ve never really wanted to go back, I don’t know.
What I do know is that currently I like drawing things that are in between, things that blur the lines between fact and fiction. So the locations or stories in many cases, may be rooted in truth, but there will always be a twist.

You?
I hate defining myself as an artist only because I’ll be so certain of who I am as an artist one day but a week later I wont be so sure anymore. As a person however, I’m always going to be a the girl that’s never going to stop chasing her potential.
